Sirindhorn Museum

The discovery and story of Phu Kum Khao began in B.E. 2513 (1970), when Phrakhru Wichit Sahatsakhun, abbot of Wat Sakkawan, found large bone fragments at the temple and kept them. In B.E. 2521 (1978), geologists from the Department of Mineral Resources, led by Warawut Suteethorn, surveyed the area and confirmed that the bones were dinosaur fossils. In B.E. 2523 (1980), a Thai–French team identified them as a forelimb bone of a long-necked plant-eating dinosaur, a sauropod. This led to systematic excavations in B.E. 2537–2538 (1994–1995).
