Ko Kret

History
Ko Kret was formed when a shortcut canal was dug across a bend in the Chao Phraya River during the reign of King Thai Sa in the Ayutthaya period, in B.E. 2265. It was called Khlong Lat Kret Noi. (Khlong Lat Kret Yai is in Pathum Thani; it was dug across the Chao Phraya near the southern end of Sam Khok District and south toward Khlong Khwang Chiang Rak.) Later, the current changed direction and eroded the banks, widening the canal until the land at the point became an island. The island was originally called Ko Sala Kun. It flourished during the Ayutthaya period, as shown by the many temples in Ayutthaya style, but became deserted when the Burmese captured Ayutthaya. After King Taksin restored independence, he allowed Mon converts to settle there. Mon residents arrived both during the Thonburi period and during the reign of Rama II. Later, when Pak Kret District was established, Ko Sala Kun became a subdistrict called Ko Kret, giving the island its present name. People travel around the island by bicycle and motorcycle.
