When someone dies, first coordinate with the doctor or relevant official to obtain the required death documentation, then contact the registrar responsible for the area. Do not guess the office closing time or wait until the next day without checking the requirements; the registration guidance sets a reporting period.
Reporting Period in the Registration Guide
The Bureau of Registration Administration says that when a death occurs at home, the householder or person who finds the body must notify the local registrar within 24 hours of the time of death or discovery. For a death outside the home, the person who accompanied the deceased or found the body must notify the local registrar within the period specified in the guide. Exceptions may apply when travel is not possible. Read the official guide and confirm the procedure with the local registrar.
Documents to Prepare
- The house registration book for the home where the deceased was listed, if available.
- A medical death certificate from a hospital or medical facility, if available.
- Identification for the person reporting the death.
- Any additional documents or information requested by the local official for the specific case.
If It Happens Outside Office Hours
Contact the medical facility or local reporting authority to ask about the on-duty office, police station, or local administrative office responsible for the case. Record the official’s name and the time of the call. The Bureau of Registration Administration publishes a Guide to reporting a death and required documents and a registration information center. The center’s phone number and service hours may change, so check its website before calling.
