Phu Ruea National Park

History
Located in Phu Ruea and Tha Li districts, the park covers about 121 square kilometres and borders the Lao People’s Democratic Republic to the north. It is a high mountain with a broad plateau at its summit, 1,365 metres above sea level, and dense pine growth. One distinctive feature is a projecting cliff shaped like the prow of a large junk. The complex terrain comprises alternating sandstone and granite mountains. Wildlife includes bears, muntjac, dhole, Siamese fireback and big-headed turtles. Common plants include wild roses, mosses, ferns and beautiful orchids such as Ma Wing, Sam Poi, Aiyaret and Ueang Kham, which grow on trees and rocks and bloom in succession throughout the year.
