History

Phimai Historical Park is in Phimai District and contains a major Khmer-period archaeological site. The name “Phimai” comes from “Vimai” or “Vimaipura,” which appears in Khmer inscriptions on a stone slab at the front of the sanctuary’s cloister entrance and in several other inscriptions. The word may have referred to a sacred image or a religious site.
