Kaeng Tana National Park

History
Kaeng Tana National Park covers about 80 square kilometers across Sirindhorn and Khong Chiam districts. Its landscape consists of a plateau and low hills, with Khao Banthat as its highest point. The forest generally has stunted trees, with grassland in some areas. The Mun and Mekong rivers pass through the park, and the park office stands beside the Mun River near Kaeng Tana. According to local accounts and beliefs, the name “Tana” was originally derived from “marana,” meaning death. The rapids have strong currents, many rocks and several underwater caves. The source says people travelling by river or fishing there often died in accidents, leading residents to call the rapids “Kaeng Marana”; the name later became “Kaeng Tana,” which was used for the national park.
