Chiang Khong

History
Chiang Khong is a small, peaceful district on the Mekong River, opposite Huaixai in the Lao PDR. It is about 115 kilometres from the provincial capital and about 55 kilometres east of Chiang Saen on Highway 1129. Chiang Khong is known for Pla Buk (giant catfish) breeding. The Chiang Khong Fishery Station can artificially inseminate and breed Pla Buk, described as the world’s largest freshwater fish; fingerlings bred there have been released into several rivers. The fishing season is mid-January to May. Boat trips offer views of the Mekong’s scenery and riverside life. Visitors can also go to Ban Hat Bai, a Thai Lue community known for local fabrics. To cross to Huaixai, contact the immigration office or a tour agency in Chiang Khong.
