Withholding tax is not the final tax in every case. A payer withholds and remits tax according to the income type and applicable rules; the recipient must report income and tax withheld as required. If more tax was withheld than the calculated liability, a refund may be available after a complete return is filed.
Documents recipients should keep
- The withholding tax certificate from the payer.
- Contracts, invoices, proof of payment and details about the work or income type.
- A comparison of the net amount received, gross amount and tax remitted.
When filing, check that the income type on the certificate matches the actual income and enter the withheld amount as shown on the document. The Revenue Code’s refund provision is in Section 27 ter; see also the Revenue Department’s filing and deadline guidance.
If the certificate is incorrect or missing
Contact the payer and request a correction before filing. Do not change the figures yourself without supporting documents. If tax was withheld but no certificate was provided, gather payment records and ask the payer for the document, which may support a tax credit or refund claim.
